'Major' is a real-life Indian Army officer, who was one of the 10 elite commandos who participated in the operation on Mumbai that ended on the siege on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus building. After the operation, he was awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award, for displaying "extraordinary courage and displaying high standards of leadership and gallantry in action". He died in the attack, in which three terrorists were killed. The film tells the story of Major Unnikrishnan and his family, who they live and work in the State of Maharashtra.
After the 26/11 attacks, the Indian Navy decided to grant Major Unnikrishnan the Ashoka Chakra in recognition of his exemplary act of bravery. Major Unnikrishnan has already been promoted to the rank of Major. In the post-script, his family is shown celebrating his promotion and the award of the Ashoka Chakra.
Based on the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was martyred in action during the November 2008 Mumbai attacks and was consequently awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award, on 26 January 2009.
