Plot Summary
In 2007, three years before the Lambert haunting, Quinn Brenner meets with retired demonologist Elise Rainier. Elise reluctantly agrees to try to contact the spirit of Quinn's mother, Lily, who died one year prior. However, Elise urges Quinn not to try to contact her mother again after sensing a malevolent force. Grace, an elderly woman who lives at Quinn's apartment building and suffers from dementia, says several strange and cryptic things to Quinn, seeming to allude to an unseen spirit.
Quinn later attends an audition for a performance arts school. After leaving the audition, she sees a mysterious figure waving to her from the distance on the street. Distracted, she's hit by a car, breaking both of her legs. Now stuck in her home with her father, Sean, and brother, Alex, Quinn begins to experience increasingly disturbing paranormal phenomena, including seeing visions of a dark spirit wearing an oxygen mask known as the Man Who Can't Breathe. Quinn realizes that he's the same figure that caused her accident.
Sean runs into Grace's husband, Harry, and learns that Grace has passed away. Sean meets with Elise, who like him is also grieving after the death of her husband, Jack, and tries to convince her to help his daughter. Elise refuses, explaining that she stopped using her gift after a demonic spirit threatened to kill her if she continued. She also reveals that she has been haunted by a ghostly bride in a black dress who claims to be waiting for her in the dark realm called "the Further".
Meanwhile, Quinn is attacked by the Man Who Can't Breathe again and falls into a coma. Sean contacts two paranormal investigators, Specs and Tucker, who work with Elise. They set up equipment in Quinn's room and try to communicate with her spirit. They manage to contact Quinn, who tells them that she is trapped in the Further by the Man Who Can't Breathe. She also warns them that there is something else with them in the room.
Elise arrives and decides to help Quinn after having a nightmare about the bride in black killing her. She enters the Further and finds Quinn in an apartment building that resembles hers but is decaying and surrounded by lost souls. She rescues Quinn from the Man Who Can't Breathe and leads her back to her body. However, they are confronted by the bride in black on their way back.
Elise recognizes the bride in black as the same demon that threatened her before. She realizes that it is actually a man who was a serial killer in life and used to dress as a woman to lure his victims. He reveals his name as Parker Crane and says that he has been following Elise since she was a child. He also says that he killed his mother when she tried to stop him from killing more people.
Elise fights back against Parker and manages to escape with Quinn. They return to their bodies and wake up. However, Parker possesses Quinn's body and attacks Sean and Elise. Elise calls out to Parker's mother's spirit, who appears and scolds Parker for his crimes. She orders him to leave Quinn's body and return to his own corpse.
Parker obeys and leaves Quinn's body. Elise then destroys Parker's corpse, which is hidden in a secret room behind a red door in the apartment building. She also finds a collection of newspaper clippings and photos that reveal that Parker was the notorious serial killer known as "the Bride in Black".
Quinn recovers from her coma and reunites with her family. Elise decides to continue using her gift and joins Specs and Tucker as a team of paranormal investigators. She also receives a call from a woman named Lorraine Lambert, who asks for her help with her son, Dalton, setting up the events of the first film.
