Plot summary
The movie follows the life of Raju (Rajesh Khanna), an orphan who grows up with four elephants as his friends. He performs with them at street corners to earn a living. He meets Tanu (Tanuja), a rich girl who falls in love with him. Her father Ratanlal (Madan Puri) initially opposes their marriage, but later agrees. Raju becomes successful and builds his own zoo, where he keeps his elephants and other wild animals. He treats them as his family.
However, trouble starts when a greedy real estate developer Jaganath (Anant Mahadevan) plans to build a township on the forest land where Raju's animals live. He is backed by a powerful minister (Rajiv Kachroo) and a corrupt police officer (Ravi Kale). Raju refuses to sell his land and fights for the protection of his animals. His wife Tanu feels neglected and fears for their child's safety from the animals. She asks Raju to choose between his family and his elephants. Raju chooses his elephants, which leads to their separation.
Raju's loyal elephant Ramu sacrifices his life to save Raju's family from Jaganath's goons. This makes Tanu realize her mistake and reunite with Raju. They join hands with other villagers and animal lovers to stop Jaganath's project and save the forest.
