genki is a great resource for any japanese learner. whether you're a beginner or advanced, genki will take you from beginner to intermediate. and with the second edition of genki, you get more of what you love about the first edition. its vocabulary and grammar explanations are easier to understand. the language has been updated to be more relevant to modern day. and the method of study has been revised to be even easier to understand.

the workbook contains a number of problems. one problem in particular is used to drill vocabulary into the heads of the students. the idea is to have a written form of the vocabulary to reference. unfortunately, this is usually a convoluted mess of words that don't mean what they seem to mean. the problems are a little more straightforward and are an enjoyable challenge. the problem is, the problems are not very good.
here is the part that everyone hates about genki. there are 100 problems in the workbook. the problems are in groups of 20. that means there are only a total of 10 problems to go through. that sounds like a lot. it's not. the workbook will walk you through each problem over the course of one day. i believe the average student will need at least 2 days to go through the workbook. it's recommended to have at least one day in each chapter. that means about 5 hours of work and another 4 hours of walking around. this adds up quickly. i've never found myself liking the workbook. it's the most tedious thing i have ever done in my life.
genki 2 is another textbook to have fallen into the trap of using the medium of cd-rom. it's a two volume textbook. volume 1 contains the grammar, vocabulary, and basic kanji. volume 2 contains the grammar, vocabulary, and basic kanji, plus 50 verb conjugations. a cd-rom containing all of this was probably a no brainer back in 1999. it was probably the only way to get the grammar and vocabulary in a textbook. but today, the ability to download everything for free is not a deterrent for purchasing. if anything, it's become a selling point.
