Yoshikawa also created another devil transformation, the Devil Trigger, for Nero. Though not as expansive enough to call it a true special edition, Devil May Cry 4 features a lot of fan-favorite additions and an attractive price that makes it well worth double-dipping (or triple-dipping if you originally started on console and moved to PC). DEVIL MAY CRY 4 SPECIAL EDITION is a remastered version of the extremely popular 2008 action game for consoles and PC. The original game features a sarcastic young teen named Nero from the town of Arcadia. Nero's life is suddenly upended one day when the famous demon hunter Dante crashes a religious ceremony and assassinates the leader of the Order of the Sword as well as several of its members. Seeking revenge, Nero tracks Dante across a large number of environments, unaware that a larger threat could destroy both of them as well as the entire world. The Special Edition also includes Vergil, Dante's half-brother, along with series favorites (and fellow demon hunters) Trish and Lady as playable characters, each with her own special abilities and weapons. It also includes the Legendary Dark Knight mode (originally found in the PC version of the game), which significantly increases the number of enemies in each battle, as well as a bonus Japanese language track for dialogue.
But while these additions are a great touch for this generation of systems, DMC4SE feels more like a minor retread than the definitive edition of the game. If you choose to play as one of the three new characters, you get an intro and outro movie that's unique to these antiheroes. Unfortunately, Capcom decided to not include any other story cut scenes from their perspective. As a result, the new characters feel shallow fighting through each mission without a plot, which will cause players to quickly lose interest in the game. On top of that, some of the camera-angle problems that plagued the original remain, making it hard to see the action during some combat sequences. If you can overlook the camera issues, and you only play the three new characters after completing the initial story mode, you'll find an enjoyable action title. It's just not the perfect, definitive edition that it should be.
All that being said, the format for releasing this edition feels odd. If you paid $60 (or more for the Deluxe edition) just a year ago, Capcom is asking for another $40 for what is, basically, the same game.

Since this is the special edition of the game, the first thing you will notice is the addition of new characters. The additional characters include Vergil, Lady, Trish and of course Nero and Dante from the original. Full disclosure, I didn't know that Nero and Dante were the main characters and the main story from the original release back in 2008 so I played the game with Lady and Trish since they were available at the start. After doing some research however, it appears that the main story is pretty much the same regardless of who you play as. You will still get the same locations, the same enemies, the same boss fights, but the cut scenes will vary a bit depending on who you play as. First thing is first, one of the most important things about a game like this is of course the combat, and I am happy to say that the combat is fantastic. You use a variety of button combinations to unleash hell on anything around you all while earning all kinds of currency to spend in the store. At first, you won't that many combos at your disposal, but of course as you progress through the game and buy more skills, you will be pulling off ridiculous combos in no time. If you are having a hard time deciding what skills to buy, you can also auto buy skills depending on how you want to play. In combat you have three ranged weapons to choose from (Lady's being her rocket launcher, pistols, and revolvers) and you can easily swap between them in battle with the press of a button. You also get a grapple maneuver which can launch enemies in the air and of course you have a melee attack. Being surrounded by a group of enemies only to bust out a huge "Atomic" combo is very satisfying and is probably the best part of the game.
